Types of childcare & ECE in New Zealand

A plain-English overview of every licensed early childhood education service type in New Zealand — who they are for, what hours they operate, and who runs them.

Childcare centres (also called Education & Care Services) are the most common ECE type in New Zealand. They offer flexible hours, including full-day care, and cater for children from birth to school age. Most operate year-round. Teachers are required to hold or be working towards a recognised ECE qualification.

Related services include Puna Reo (Pasifika language nests) and Leo o Fanau Moana (Samoan language immersion).

Hospital-based ECE

Hospital-based ECE services operate within hospitals to support children who are patients or visiting family members. They are licenced ECE services and follow the same curriculum framework as other licensed services. There are a small number of these services nationwide.
