How the NZ school system works

New Zealand schooling follows a clear progression. Most children move through three stages before finishing at Year 13.

Some schools combine multiple stages. See NZ school FAQs or all school types for composite, specialist, and correspondence options. Learn about NCEA qualifications or how school zoning works.

FAQ

Common questions

Real questions from NZ families, newcomers, and parents.

Is FernHub run by the government?
No. FernHub is an independent site that presents public information in easier-to-use forms. Always confirm critical decisions with the relevant agency or school directly.
What is the Equity Index (EQI) and does a high score mean a bad school?
No. The EQI measures the level of socioeconomic disadvantage in a school's community — it is not a quality rating. A higher EQI means higher disadvantage, not lower quality. Read the full EQI guide.
Can I enrol my child in a school outside our zone?
Yes, but it depends on the school. Schools with an enrolment scheme (zone) must give priority to in-zone students. Out-of-zone places are offered by ballot if spaces remain. Check a school's profile on FernHub to see if it has an enrolment scheme. Read the full school zoning guide.
What is 20 Hours Free ECE and who qualifies?
All children aged 3–5 who are NZ citizens or residents are entitled to 20 hours of government-funded ECE per week. Most licensed services participate. See the 20 Hours ECE guide for full details.
What is the difference between a composite school and a contributing school?
A contributing school covers Years 1–6 only, feeding into a separate intermediate. A composite school covers a wider range — often Years 1–13 — in a single school. See school type FAQs for more.
Where can I find childcare near me?
Use the childcare map finder to search 4,378 licensed ECE services by location, type, and 20 Hours ECE availability.
How do I compare schools side by side?
Go to the school comparison tool, search for two or more schools, and compare by EQI, roll size, school type, authority, and gender.
Does FernHub show NCEA results?
Not directly. NZQA does not publish NCEA results as a bulk dataset. Each school profile on FernHub links to the school's official NZQA results page so you can review their latest results there. For a full explanation of how NCEA works, see the NCEA guide.
How do I contact FernHub?
